Doris Fierros, Director of the Golden
Arrow Center, started volunteering in Mexico City, Mexico (1991-1993)
at St. Patrick Catholic Church by helping fundraising for The Sisters
of Charity home for abandoned children with special needs. After moving
back to The United States in 1997, she volunteered for the baby closet
of the Preservation for Human Dignity Center, a pregnancy center in the
Chicago, IL area.
Since Doris is fluent in
Spanish, she also interprepted intake interviews for the intake
coordinators. After several months of interpreting, she took the three
month training class on how to perform intake interviews. Gradually,
she was asked to interprept for the case managers and help with
pregnancy tests. This was also followed by two months of intense
training classes. The case manager worked with clients on a monthly
basis to help set short and long term goals.
In 1999 her husband was
transferred to Louisville, KY., when Doris joined The Golden Arrow
Center for Mothers and Children as a volunteer. In September 2002 she
was given the directorship of the center.
